What is the difference between Blue Line and Black Line?
Some of the organisations we are working with have got a lot of traditional safety tools in place which are typically focused on compliance.
So whether it's inspections, audits, site visits - all these activities tend to be there to say okay, here's the Black Line. Where are people in terms of meeting that black line?
All these methods though can equally be applied to trying to get insight into the Blue Line. So if a senior leader is doing a site visit, rather than saying okay is everyone wearing their PPE? Is everyone adhering to our particular policies or site rules?
If they say, I'm going to go there - not tell - but I'm going to go there and listen, I'm going to go there and ask questions - what does a good day look like here? What does a bad day look like here? If you were in my position what do you think I really need to know about this site?
If we ask questions and listen and we're curious rather than going in assuming we already have the answers and we're going to do the telling - that can really be a game changer in terms of the amount of information we can get from our people.
