Workshop Overview
Operational Learning is at the heart of Human and Organisational Performance (HOP). Organisations that develop strong Operational Learning capability don't have to rely on learning only after something goes wrong; they intentionally create opportunities to learn from everyday work, strengthening systems and improving performance over time.
This practical two-day workshop equips participants with the mindset, skills and tools to embed Operational Learning into the way work is led, managed and improved. Through active discussions, practical exercises and real workplace examples, participants will explore how to apply Operational Learning principles to existing activities, such as investigations, safety conversations and everyday operational interactions, while also developing confidence in using new tools and approaches to better understand work as it is really done.
Participants will leave with practical skills, improved facilitation capability, and a toolkit of Operational Learning approaches they can immediately apply to strengthen learning, improve system performance, and support a more adaptive, resilient organisation.

HOPLAB has been supporting organisations to adopt HOP and Operational Learning since 2017.
Our HOP Fundamentals and HOP & Learning Teams courses were the first in Australia and New Zealand, and have now grown to attract a global audience of safety professionals interested in learning the foundations of HOP.
We work with each organisation to understand how work happens and guide decision makers to reflect, learn and grow – harnessing the potential that already exists within its people. Because of that, we can offer a unique perspective and a more organic approach that drives more sustainable results.

FAQs
Operational Learning is a practical approach to understanding how work is really performed so organisations can continuously improve safety, performance and resilience. It focuses on learning from both everyday work and operational events, helping organisations identify opportunities for improvement by engaging the people closest to the work.
You'll develop practical Operational Learning skills that can be applied immediately into your everyday work. Through hands-on activities and real-world scenarios, you’ll learn how to facilitate better learning conversations, use an Event Learning framework to explore events, and apply practical tools to better understand work, strengthen learning and improve your workforce engagement.
Prior HOP training is not essential. However, for the best outcomes, we recommend having completed our HOP Fundamentals, HOP & Learning Teams, or HOP Fundamentals eLearning course, to build foundational knowledge of the HOP principles. If you have a basic understanding of HOP, or simply bring curiosity and a genuine willingness to learn from the experiences of your people, you will be well positioned to get value from the workshop. We begin with a refresher of key HOP and Operational Learning concepts before moving into practical application.
The HOP & Learning Teams course focuses on building a foundational understanding of HOP concepts and Operational Learning approaches, with a focus on Learning Teams. This workshop is designed to build practical capability across a broader range of Operational Learning methods.
Rather than introducing new theory, participants spend more time applying concepts through hands-on activities, practising facilitation skills, and using Operational Learning tools that can be integrated into everyday work and existing organisational processes.
Participants will learn how to facilitate better learning conversations, ask more effective questions, identify opportunities to learn from everyday work, introduce practical operational learning activities, and apply approaches that strengthen organisational learning over time.
This workshop is not about completely replacing your existing investigation process. Instead, it introduces a framework and practical tools to help organisations better understand the reality of what happened, including new questions, analysis approaches and learning techniques that can be integrated into current methods. The framework taught can be tailored to each organisation’s existing processes and needs, allowing teams to strengthen their current practices rather than start again. Participants will apply these concepts through a practical case study on Day 2.

HOPLAB can support organisations beyond the workshop with ongoing capability development to help embed Operational Learning into everyday work. This can include Learning Teams coaching and facilitation, Operational Learning implementation, and/or supporting the integration of an Event Learning framework into your current investigation process.
